Small Steps

When I was working as an Instructional Designer, I was the project manager for migrating our department from one Learning Management System (LMS) to another. We had hundreds of courses to move, and part of my job was to “sell” the new system to our instructors.

To make things easier for everyone, I adopted a “Small Step” approach. I divided the six-month migration into three distinct blocks, allowing instructors to choose a block for their course migration. During each block, my team of Instructional Designers worked closely with those instructors to transfer their content, tidy it up, and teach them how to navigate the new system.

Surprisingly, the migration went much smoother than I ever expected. Even the skeptics in our organization, who had doubts about the process, later admitted it went exceptionally well.

I carry many lessons from my time as an Instructional Designer into my current work with websites. One key takeaway is the value of the “Small Step” approach. By breaking down complex tasks into manageable blocks, projects can be less stressful and and skepticism can be transformed into success.

I see the same principle in action with website design and when working with small business owners. When my clients feel overwhelmed, keeping things simple and focusing on small, achievable goals often leads to impressive results.

So, no matter what project you’re tackling, remember that progress is made step by step. Embrace the small wins, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
