Where Do I Start – Your Digital Presence

Having a digital presence or updating or creating a website can feel like an overwhelming thing and it’s easy for busy small business owners to procrastinate, So many questions! Where do I start? What should I do?

The first thing to keep in mind is that if you consistently take even small steps, you will make progress. The fancy term for this is aggregate marginal gains which means, making small, consistent improvements to achieve significant results. Sometimes it’s not as easy as it sounds, but in the next several weeks, I’m going to ask questions and give suggestions that could help you move forward.

Define Your Brand

What is your business brand? It is more than just a logo or a catchy tagline. It also includes your company’s mission, values, and the overall experience you provide to your customers. What do you want to achieve with your business, and how do you want to impact your audience? Your answers to these questions should guide the decisions you make about how your business is presented and how you market your business.

Next, who is your target audience? Who are the people you want to reach? Understanding their pain points will help you make sure your services and your messaging about your business meets their needs.

Lastly, what is your unique value proposition (UVP)? What sets you apart from your competitors? This could be your exceptional customer service, innovative solutions, or specialized expertise. Your UVP should clearly communicate why someone should choose your services over others.

By going through these questions and defining your business brand, your digital presence will be consistent in all the ways you reach out to potential customers. It can help you attract and retains customers.

Domain Names

Choosing a domain name is an important step in establishing your online identity. Your domain name serves as your website’s address and is one of the first steps when you start on your website journey.

Your domain name should reflect your brand’s identity and be easy for customers to remember and type. Start by brainstorming keywords that relate to your business, products, or services.

Try to incorporate some of those keyword that relate to your business, products, or services. into your domain name. This will help improve your website’s search engine optimization (SEO) and help potential customers understand what you offer.

Keep your domain name short and simple. A concise name is easier to remember and reduces the risk of typos when users enter it into a browser. Avoid using complex words, hyphens, or numbers, which can confuse visitors. It’s also essential to choose the right domain extension. While .com is the most popular, alternatives like .net, .org, or industry-specific extensions (like .design or .tech) can also work if they align better with your brand.

Once you have a few potential names, check their availability using domain registration platforms. You can find different domain registration tools through a Google search. If your preferred name is taken, consider slight variations or synonyms. Securing the right domain name not only enhances your credibility but also makes it easier for customers to find you online.

Social Media Accounts

Setting up social media accounts is an important part of building your digital presence. Social media platforms allow you to engage with your audience, share valuable content, and promote your brand effectively.

Begin by selecting the platforms that best suit your target audience and business goals. Common platforms include Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads, BlueSky and Pinterest. Each platform serves a different purposes and has a different audience.

Once you’ve chosen your social media platform, create accounts and complete your profiles thoroughly. You can use your brand’s logo as the profile picture for easy customer recognition, and design a visually appealing cover photo that reflects your brand’s identity.

Fill in the bio or about sections with a clear and concise description of your business, including your mission, services, and a link to your website if you already have one. This initial setup helps establish your brand’s presence and informs visitors about who you are.

Engagement is important on social media. Develop a content strategy that includes a mix of promotional posts, educational content, and interactive elements like polls or questions. Consistent and authentic engagement with your audience builds relationships and fosters community. Respond to comments, messages, and reviews to show your audience that you value their input.

By actively participating on social media, you can enhance your brand awareness, attract followers, and ultimately convert them into customers.
